| Rather than bore you with copious notes on how
to make this particular terrain from scratch, we're
going to divulge some key design decisions we took
with regard to the production of all our High Elf
terrain. These guidelines should help you invent
your own High Elf terrain. |

The
tower is an iconic High Elf terrain piece. It shares
many of the shapes of the High Elf army, namely the
graceful curves and elongated designs. Terrain can help
to reflect the nature of the army it represents, and
the tower and the building are no exceptions.
The tower was originally imagined as a lighthouse
— this of course sits well with the High Elves
being a seafaring race. Alternatively, it can be used
as a Wizard's tower or can be combined with the second
building to create a small habitat on a gaming board.
The structures were made from thin card, though those
with keen eyes will notice the odd piece of plastic
from the Warhammer 40,000 building kits. Sometimes,
it's worth looking at alternative uses for items that
are normally used elsewhere; in this case, the top of
the tower is actually taken from a super glue lid!
Despite the height of the tower, it doesn't take up
a great deal of space on the gaming table. Often, a
piece of terrain can seem out of scale simply by having
too large a footprint; here, we've kept the base very
close to the edge of the terrain. A simple trick such
as this allows plenty of space for troops to move on
the tabletop whilst allowing us to create great-looking
terrain.

The decision to build rocks
was brought about by a desire to see how Ulthuan differed
from the rest of the Warhammer world. As extreme magic
users, we felt that High Elf terrain would have a different
feel, almost as if it had been shaped by its masters.
The coast of Ulthuan is known for its white cliffs,
and this was reflected in the appearance of the rocks.
They were also built as small scatter pieces so they
could be used in games either as stand-alone pieces
or grouped together.
The rocks themselves were carved out of polystyrene
with a craft knife. Once the shape had been sculpted,
ready mix filler was used to smooth the surfaces. The
polystyrene was then mounted on a hardboard base to
add solidity. It's worth noting that all of the
bases have been cut close to the terrain piece. This
ensures the scenery doesn't dominate the table.
We painted the rocks with a basecoat of Desert Yellow,
followed by successive highlights of Bleached Bone and
Skull White. To weather the recesses, we also drybrushed
Graveyard Earth.

One of the things that
marks the High Elves out is their use of waystones.
These ancient obelisks act as conduits for the magical
forces of the warhammer world and can be found both
on Ulthuan and within the rest of the world itself.
As the High Elves withdrew to their island realm, most
of the abandoned waystones have fallen into disrepair
and ruin.
The waystones themselves presented an opportunity
to update an iconic terrain piece to match the current
style of the army. The general shape was made from plasticard
with the raised edges made from thin strips of card.
