There are many armies of the Warhammer World that can field a Dragon or a Dragon-like creature. The release of the High Elf Dragon is the perfect opportunity to make a unique creation for your army privileged enough to be able to bring one of the ancient, and deadly creatures to war. The following pages present just this, six High Elf Dragons modeled and painted to fit into a variety of armies.

Modelling
For my Dragon I wanted to use most of the components from the kit, so I wasn’t spending too much time doing complicated conversions. I think the High Elf Dragon kit has some really nice pieces that fit well with my Slaanesh army and the only conversion I really needed was a replacement head for the rider; I used the head from the Slaanesh Hero on foot for this. I also used some jewellery chain for the Dragon’s reins as it seemed more appropriate for the followers of the Dark Prince.
My main concern when constructing the Dragon was to be able to transport it easily within my figure case. Fortunately the wings fit tightly into the body without the need to glue them, so transporting it would be far less painful and involve a lot fewer repairs.
Painting
I wanted my Dragon to stand out, yet still be in keeping with the rest of the army. For the rider I kept to my army’s colour scheme of Liche Purple highlighted with Warlock Purple, finished off with an ‘Ardcoat Varnish, giving a rich yet sublime Slaanesh feel to it. I painted the rider’s robes with Hawk Turquoise, giving the entire model a subtle contrast that helps break the up Dragon from the rider.
The Dragon itself was painted with similar colours, albeit without the shiny varnish as this would make the model too similar to the rider. The underbelly has been painted with a mix of Liche, Warlock and Hormagaunt Purple, highlighted with Dheneb Stone.
For all of the metallics on the model I used Chainmail highlighted with Mithril Silver and washed with Purple Ink, giving a nice purple tint to the armour and weaponry. |
